Jennifer Fleming:  Founder & Director

jen 2My background is fundamentally linked to art, some of my earliest memories involve being engrossed in a drawing or painting and it was always an obvious path for me to take in life.  I studied Fine Art at university and this lead me to start a career as an Artist and Personal Art Tutor.

When I started The Independent Art School back in 2009 it was really a personal mission for me right from the start.  I was inspired to start the IAS after thinking back to my own experiences and I was essentially creating a service that I had wanted so many times during my own art education and in the early stages of my creative career after university.  This is probably what kept me motivated during the difficult times while trying to get things off the ground; I knew how much The Independent Art School could benefit our students because I have been in their position and essentially I still am in their position, no one ever outgrows the need for a creative mentor to provide support, guidance and an alternative perspective to your work.

My favourite part of my day is talking to students; it’s so exciting as each student is completely unique with their own story and their own motivations for taking art classes.  I love hearing how they are incorporating art into their busy lives and feel so much admiration for what they are achieving.  I’m always keen to hear from our students, you can call me any time during office hours on 0203 369 0230 if you’d like to say hello!

Running a business is not easy and balancing all of the various demands can sometimes seem like an impossible task.  My motivation comes from the hope that we are creating an organisation that will positively impact our students and tutors for many years to come.

I am fortunate to be working with a wonderful team of staff to help manage all of the exciting projects we are running.   Here’s an introduction to our team:

Antony Clarkson:  Course Coordinator
Antony Clarkson The Independent Art School

Antony is a highly experienced professional Artist who has exhibited all over the world.  He is also an Art Tutor and previously worked as Artist in Residence for Manchester Metropolitan University before joining our teaching team.  He now runs our Life Drawing for Creative Development, Painting for Pleasure and Creative Drawing classes in Manchester and his students absolutely adore him.

Antony works remotely from Manchester as our Course Coordinator where he coordinates all of our group classes, managing tutor timetables, ordering art materials, lesson planning and generally managing our regular tutors.

Samantha Sheldrake:  Personal Assistant & Personal Tuition Coordinator
Samantha Sheldrake The Independent Art School

Sam is a trained Artist who specialises in film production.  She works in the London office full time as my Personal Assistant and also coordinates the very busy Personal Tuition schedule, ensuring that students and tutors are enjoying their classes.

With her caring nature and friendly manner Sam is a firm favourite with our students and has an exceptional talent for inspiring others.

Clara Tait:  Marketing & Administrative Assistant

Clara Tait The Independent Art School

Clara is a talented writer and an experienced marketer, having worked previously for Time Out and the Financial Times in their content marketing departments.  She is also an illustrator who is currently starting a small enterprise selling her own beautifully illustrated products.

Clara has been busy writing some amazing blog articles which we hope will really help people to develop their art.  She also helps to answer student queries through phone and e-mail support.

Rebecca Scofield:  Marketing & Administrative Assistant
Rebecca Scofield The Independent Art School

Becca is a gifted mixed media Artist who is training to become an Art Therapist.  She has a natural skill for communicating with people and for this reason she is in charge of ensuring that our current students are happy with their classes.

Becca calls students for feedback and monitors responses, managing the process to correct any issues or concerns students may highlight.  Becca has also started our new monthly Creativity Challenge Projects to help inspire students and get exposure for their work; make sure you are signed up to our newsletter to get involved!
