Our Goals

The Independent Art School want to make art more accessible to people of all ages and abilities. We believe that developing your artistic skills and knowledge should be a fun and engaging process which is designed around your individual creative needs.

Our Students

Our students come to us from a wide range of backgrounds; some are experienced artists who want a creative mentor to help them to step back and analyse their own work, others are complete beginners with no training in art but a whole lot of passion for learning something new. Whatever your background or future goals, we would love to hear from you.

We match each student with a dedicated and like-minded art tutor who specialises in their specific area of interest. The tutor will then work with the student to develop their skills, confidence and creativity. Lessons can take place in the comfort of your own home, or if you prefer we will provide a convenient alternative location.

Our Tutors

Our tutor’s have a wide range of skills and experience; from qualified teachers working in some of the most respected schools in their area, to Practising Artists with artwork in major public collections around the world.  All of our tutors are highly selected; with specialism’s ranging from painting in oils to sculpting with metal, from abstract to photo realism and from cutting edge contemporary to traditional.

Our Organisation

The Independent Art School began in Birmingham in 2009 and has since been built into a thriving artistic community. Our tutors are encouraged to share helpful advice with each other and students are often invited to free events, like museum tours or talks, where they can come together and inspire one another in their artistic development.

We are a small organisation part-funded by Arts Council England, Creative Industry Finance, Birmingham City Council and private funding with a mission to make art more accessible to anyone with an interest in the subject. We are committed to helping our students to develop as artists and actively encourage any feedback or suggestions that can improve our student’s experience.

After the initial success of The Independent Art School in Birmingham and London, we are very excited to be opening our new Manchester branch. We look forward to getting to know our new students in Manchester and building an exciting new artistic community in this vibrant city.

Our Courses

Along with providing personal art tuition, The Independent Art School also offer a wide selection of art short courses in a diverse range of subjects. From silk painting to photography, or from life drawing to art history, we have a course to excite any creative mind. All of our courses are designed to compliment personal art tuition and are heavily subsidised for our current students.
